Barrie Jervis
I took up drawing in my mid-teens and began oil painting in my late teens. I first attended life drawing when about sixteen at the instigation of my grammar school art teacher, who ran an evening class in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Art was placed on the back boiler whilst I studied Natural Sciences at university. It was resumed afterwards when I attended evening classes and life drawing classes at Northampton Technical College and then life drawing at evening classes in Newcastle-under-Lyme. It was back to the back-boiler whilst I researched for a PhD in Sheffield. After this I attended evening classes in Plymouth where I obtained an art A-level and joined an art club, where I sold my first paintings. In 1983 I spent eight months living in Pennsylvania, where I discovered pastel painting. Back in Sheffield I joined and exhibited with Hallam Art Group, sometimes selling my work. During this period I found that my pastels were better than the oils, so since then I have mainly painted in pastels. I obtained the Certificate in Painting Studies from Sheffield Polytechnic's School of Art. My pastel painting was considerably improved by attending Annabel Greenhalgh's pastels course in Pembrokeshire and completing her correspondence courses. I have attended several other short courses. In 2017 I was accepted as a member of Heeley Art Club and have exhibited with it.
My work now is mainly of the beautiful Derbyshire landscapes through which I love to walk, but I also paint on other themes e.g. Le Tour de France, sun-worshippers in Brittany, and the Discovery of the Higgs boson! I continue with life drawing on and off.
